Christmas cards

December is coming soon! Have you already finished writing your Christmas cards? I have a penpal in Scotland, and she often sends me nice letters. We have lots in common, so we've been writing each other for years. The other day, I sent my children's photos. I'd like her to enjoy my cards as well.
In our time, emal seem to take over for snail-mail, but I love writing a letter and waiting for ones from friends. It takes time to write a letter, especially by hand, and that's why I always appreciate it. I'm grateful what my friends have done for me, and I'd like to do the same thing in return, thinking about them.

Hello Emi
Yeah, it is nice to receive Christmas cards from overseas.
I am going to send five cards.
These days you seem to be busy with homework.
I am, by contrast, busy with work...
But I should think I am lucky because I sometimes use English in business. Neverthless, I still want to make more time for myself. Am I selfish ?
Sincerely
yuko

I can't believe you say you're not good at Japanese because you know such a difficult word that I've never heard of! If you need some help to study Japanese, feel free to ask me! I've been a Japanese for over 30 years, do I guess I know something! XD
To yuko
Five cards!? Are all of them supposed to sent abroad? Wonderful. I'm a lazy, so I don't like to write New Year's card called 年賀状, but somehow I'm happy with Christmas cards. This may be because Christams cards are beautiful.XD

When I first saw Japanese Christmas cards, I couldn't believe all the beautiful and intricate designs that are readily available. They really put the plain and simple designs of most American cards to shame. I wish there were an easy way for me to buy all my Christmas cards from Japan -- well, other than going there in person I mean, although it would be wonderful if I could do so again!
To Michael
Oh, do you think so? I didn't think about it! Maybe Japanese people think too much about Christmas...we may need to think Christmas as one of religious holiday, not just as a party-thing...
Having said that, I'm so glad to hear you like Japanese Christmas cards!

I wonder.... Is part of the joy in preparing Christmas cards because you don't have to do it? If you didn't have a strong obligation to write New Years Cards every year, but could simply choose to do so if you wanted to, would you enjoy them more?
By the way, one time when I was in Japan someone tried to hire me to be Santa Claus, which really took me by surprise! Here in the US, most of our Santas are played by old, heavy men... so when I got back to my hotel later, I took a long, hard look at myself in the mirror. Do I look old already? Fat? At the time I had no idea that young skinny people often play Santa in Japan. The next day I cheered up, though, because someone else tried to hire me to do underwear modeling! ^^;

Yeah, maybe... We can't thoroughly enjoy ourselves with mandatory tasks. Do you have to write Christmas cards every year? Here in Japan, people can be flexible. For instance, my husband's workplace circulated a paper saying "You don't have to write any New Year's card to your colleagues." years ago. The reason was quite simple. Obligation doesn't mean a lot to us. I suppose it sounds a little bit weird, but I'd say we really appreciate it.
Speaking of Santa, you have an interesting story! Yes, I know some people who come from America or England are asked to be a Santa for children. Do you have another career being a model as well? Wow!

Nah, I turned him down. I don't have either the looks or the personality for modeling, though I did once go to an Armani model search party because they sent me an invitation by mistake. It was fun looking at all the perplexed faces of the beautiful people there as they tried to figure out how a dork like me got in! ^_^
By the way, sorry I still haven't gotten back to you with the Enemy of the State pic I promised. The DVD is at the top of my online rental shop queue, but they keep sending me other things from my queue instead. Most recently I watched 1リットルの涙. What an inspiring but heartbreaking story...

Wow, I'd love to have any invitation, I don't care if it's somebody's mistake or not! As for the film, take your time! I'm always here, so don't worry about it! XD

This is even further off-topic, but I found a fun site today:
www.betamaxmas.com
It tries to recreate what it was like watching TV in America in the 1980s around Christmastime. We can view various shows from that time period, including Christmas specials, on an authentic-looking TV. Sometimes the picture gets even gets fuzzy and the "rabbit ears" (antenna) need to be moved to get it in better, just like old times.
Okay, probably it's more fun for me since it's a blast from my past, but if you need some extra English practice you might enjoy a trip to the 1980s for a few minutes, too. ^_^

Is there anything you don't know? How are you so familiar with many things I'm very interested in. XD

I completely agree with you; letters are a joy to send and receive, although they do take a lot of time. You have no idea how long it takes me to write out and send a letter in Japanese! It does fill you with a certain sense of accomplishment, though, and that makes it all worthwhile.
