In that case I would probably suggest something a little stronger than prospective, eg. "Kousuke Kitajima is favored to win Gold again in [whichever race] on [whichever day]." (Sorry, I've been watching the Games somewhat randomly this year, so I'm not sure when his next big event is.)

He did it! He won the Gold once more, and even broke his previous world record set just a few days ago. Congratulations again to a truly remarkable athlete, and to the nation which is his home!

Thanks again! He is really amazing! He must have had many hardships for Gold medals, and we need to understand this first, I think. :)

By the way, "prospective" means something likely or expected to happen in the future, or likely to become or be. So before he made the Olympic team, you could have called him a prospective swimmer for the team. After being selected for the Olympics, he might have been esteemed a prospective Gold medalist. But once he won, he was no longer prospective.
