What I'm interested in now is "Skype." I'd like to chat in English in order to improve my English skills, but I rarely have a chance to get to know anyone who shares my interests. When I heard about "Skype" several months ago, I didn't find it so interesting. I should've asked the person who gave me a piece of information about it.
Have you ever made use of Skype? What's it like?

Something wrong with it
There was something wrong with our TV set yesterday, and it was finally dead last night. My husband and I didn't know what happened to it. It shouldn't be so old because we bought it just several years ago. We can see an image with it, but any sound didn't come out of it. Every TV program we watch with this TV set is like, what we call, silent movies.
However, we rarely watch TV at home these days because my husband and I found that our children seem to have poor eyesight. Maybe we don't need to buy a new TV set. Not having any TV at home can be a good thing for our health.

Today is...
Today is my birthday! Don't bother to ask me how old I finally became. I'm happy to be with my family and also looking forward to having fun in my life. What I have in my mind for my life is to just enjoy every single day. I'd love to improve my English skill as well!

What's "dance card"?
![]() | Anne of Green Gables: The Collection (2008/02/05) Megan FollowsColleen Dewhurst View detail of this item |
I can't count how many times I've seen this movie called "Anne of Green Gables." In the story, there was a scene that Anne attempted to make her rival, Gilbert Blythe, ask her to dance in the party; however, Gilbert was wise enough to see through her plot and he ignored her completely. Disappointed, Anne started dancing with her bosom friend, Diana Barry. Gilbert saw them having fun, and then he realized that Anne's dance card was left on a table. He approached it and took it to look at. It seems that Anne couldn't find her card because they were talking like this in the following scene.
Diana : I bet Gilbert Blythe took your card.
Anne : Such a romantic gesture would be utterly beyond his imagination.
《 You can see the party's scene here! 》
And it makes me confused. Why did Anne call this behaviour "a romantic gesture"? Do I have to think that taking a girl's dance card away can be a romantic thing? It must be some kind of crosscultural things. Could you tell me what they are?

Eat out
My family and I went to a neighboring city to do some shopping. We were browsing in a big shopping mall and came across a crowded restaurant which served crab dishes. One of my friends recommended it to me the other day.
"I'm a bit hungry. Why don't we try this?"
My husband said, and we decided to have early dinner there. He and our 8-year-old son ordered fried rice with crab, and our 10-year-old daughter ordered spaghetti with crab and tomato sauce. I had a bite of each dish. What my friend said was true: their dishes were all delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner and I didn't have to do the dishes last night.
Where is Gilbert's mother?

I like reading the Anne's books. Gilbert Blythe, one of the characters, is quite the ideal man for me because he is smart, determined, what's more, he is single-minded about his love.
By the way, I've been having a question about his family since my childhood. "Where is Gilbert Blythe's mother?" His father, John Blythe, often appeared in the series; however, we never see his mother's name anywhere. In the book called "Anne of Ingleside," John Blythe passed away. Why can't we find any name with John Blythe? I'm just wondering whether Gilbert's mother died young or not. Let me ask you a question if you've read the Anne's books: Where is she?

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

I went to see a movie called "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" two days in a row. I paid double but I was happy with it because the movie was fantastic as I had expected. The story needed to be shortened as with the previous ones, but the producer did the great job Harry, Ron and Hermione have grown up to be in love with someone. Time flies, they were little children only 6 years ago!
You should see this film if you're planning to finish the Harry Potter books. I understand there are some differences between the books and the movies, but I guess it's a waste not to watch the actors's splendid performances.

A festival called 博多どんたく

I found an enormous decoration called "Yamagasa" 山笠 in front of the ball park the other day. We'll have one of exciting festival here in Fukuoka, which is called Hakata Dontaku. I've never seen it yet, actually, because I'm not willing to be in the crowd. Many people will come to see this well-known festival.
"I must admit that Hakata Dontaku is an exciting one, but I can't stand seeing men in loincloth," my husband says with a frown. Well, if you don't fancy the costume for sumo wrestler, seeing the men could be torture...
One of my heroes Peter Parker
I'm not particular about comic books or anime, but I really like "Spider-Man" because of the hero named Peter Parker. Peter is very gentle and intelligent, but he is a kind of lackluster boy. He likes a girl called M.J. a lot, but he doesn't have the gumption to "declare himself." He always holds against bullying because he doesn't want to get in trouble.
I like Peter Parker because he is quite charming. I can't seem to have interests in a champion of justice. Peter is wavering between accepting his unknown power and refusing it. Peter is struggle with his secrets, especially his love for M.J. He cares about her, that's why he is afraid of losing her after making a confession. I'm highly respected a man who is single-minded, like a man called Gilbert Blythe in "Anne of Green Gables."

Anne of the Island

When I was a child, "Anne of Green Gables" written by L.M. Montgomery was one of my favorite books. I read Anne's story again and again. It has been over 20 years since then, but I'm still into Anne's world. Now that I can read English books, I've been trying "Anne of the Island" in the original; however, it seems to me that Anne's books are beyond my English skills. There are many words and expressions that I hardly understand, and I need to stick to my dictionary while I'm reading them. Having said that, I'd love to try it because I want to feel Anne's world directly.
Why is she called "Madam"?
![]() | Harry Potter Madame Hooch Hat () Extreme Halloween, Inc. View detail of this item |
I've been wondering why Madam Hooch isn't called "Professor"? Professor McGonagall is a teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Madam Pomfrey is kind of a school doctor, and that's why, I suppose, she has a bit different position from those of other teachers. But, why is Madam Hooch, who has her own class, is called "Madam" instead of "Professor" by everyone? Is it because she is an instructor to teach how to play Quidditch? I'm very curious about it.

I took part in the tour called "Anne of Green Gables." I visited "Green Gables," "Lovers' Lane," and "Haunted Wood" appeared in the book. The beach in Cavendish was beyond description.
The tour guide who took us to many places was a Japanese woman under the name of Michelle. She was familiar with the island very much and I totally enjoyed hanging around with her. She told us that many Japanese people had moved into the island. I wish I could buy a small house one day.
I had lobster for lunch, but it was smaller than one I expected. I should have gathered more information about a good restaurant.
My host mother cooked dinner for me. She made spaghetti with some delicious vegetables from her own garden. I should've studied English when I had time in order to mingle with people. I had trouble breaking the ice during each meal time.

On my way to Narita airport, I met an American guy named Kevin. Although I was not good at speaking English, we had a chat and he gave me his address. I'll write a letter to him.
I was very exhausted after 12-hour-flight. It was much easier for me to deal with air transit in Toronto. "Where should I go?" I found it quite useful expression.
I reached Prince Edward Island at around 8 PM. The elderly couple whom I was supposed to spend a week with looked friendly. They prepared a very lovely room for me to stay.

I knew next to nothing about "Evan and Jaron" until I listened to their song, "Crazy for this girl." What a beautiful voice they have! How lovely their melody is! I fell in love with the song. I looked for their album including my favorite song, and the other day I bought it.
I like songs that remind me of something, something happened in the past or something refreshes me somehow. I'd say some songs that leave an imagination for listeners. "Evan and Jaron" truly has a gift to reach my heart. Listening is believing. Well, what do you think?
