開いた口がふさがらない
開いた口がふさがらない
frequency of usage in daily life .... ★★☆☆☆
意味:あきれて、ものが言えないこと
to be amazed or stunned by something or somebody
例文1:彼の頑固な態度には、開いた口がふさがらなかった。
I was amazed by his stubborn attitude.
例文2:あまりの値段の高さに、開いた口がふさがらない。
I couldn't say anything because of its fancy price.
I'd say this expression is used in writing rather than in conversation.
Please don't say 「開いた口がふさがらない」 after finding some stupid mistakes in my English writings!
The Reader

My favorite actress, Kate Winslet, finally won an Oscar for best actress in a leading role in the film, "The Reader." I'm still very interested in this book, even though I gave up reading it a few months ago because there were so many difficult expressions or words that I couldn't follow the story without looking through my dictionary.
It is a story about two people: a teenage boy and a woman in her thirties. They fell in love and had a wonderful time together, but one day she left him. She was so attractive that he couldn't forget about her; one day he found her in a court of law...
The movie will come out this June. I won't miss it.
Let's read!
I had my hair cut today. A short time later, I happened to know that the hairstylist who cut my hair and I had interests in reading; he intruduced some interesting-sounding mystery novels.
I've been reading English novels since I started studying English, but I rarely try Japanese books these days. I was stunned when I realized that I wasn't familiar with any name of successful Japanese writers. Japanese is my mother tongue; I will keep reading like I did when I was a child.
★Looks much better!★
While I was chatting with the hairstylist, we found out that we share a common interest in reading.
Congratulations, Kate!
I've been a huge fan of Kate Winslet since I saw her in a film almost ten years ago: "Sense and Sensibility." I went to a movie theatre with my husband in order to watch her performance in 1998. Without this film, actually, I might not have been here as an English learner. The blockbuster, "Titanic," made me want to enjoy English movies without Japanese subtitles and let me have an enthusiasm for studying English.
Kate Winslet. She is the most attractive and gifted actress. She has been waiting enough for the moment her name is called. She got an award, finally! I'm very happy to see her smiling on the stage.
Eating out
How often do you eat out? My family and I rarely do, approximately twice a month or so, and there are some reasons for it.
First, it costs. Some of my neighbors eat out on weekends, saying "Mothers need to take a rest on weekends." I completely love their way of thinking, but I can't afford to it...
Second, my son complains about amount of food at a restaurant: he is a big eater for his age. My daughter's dislikes are eggs and mayonnaise, so sometimes we have to be choosy.
I'm not much of a cook, but it's said that "Practice makes perfect." Above all, I love to see my family enjoying each meal at home.
English workshop
My friends visit me twice a month, and we study English together. Before reading a textbook, we always have an hour or so speaking English. It's hard for me to express my feelings or talk about my experiences in English, but I try doing my best.
I make it a rule not to use my dictionary when I'm writing or speaking, because I tend to rely on it too much. Checking dictionaries would be better way to have a large vocabulary, but it takes some time and makes me irritated.
"Make it simple."
One of my friends, a guy from Canada, replied like this when I asked him how I could make myself understood in English. Now, I seem to understand what he meant.
Gotta Go On My Own Way
This is a song comes from "High School Movie." I'm totally into it now, and I've kept listening to it since last night. The actors, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, are marvelous. Both of them can not only act but also sing quite well. Further more, their sweet voices make me sad somehow....
I'd say I feel sad because the song reminds me of my younger days. Like most teenagers, I had a boyfriend when I was in high school. We were on a basketball club, and spent most of our time in a gym. We were happy to be together, but broke up after graduation because we felt we were having different perspective. He was a college student, and I started in life. Oh, yes, we felt "I just don't belong to your new world..."
My memory is getting to fade away as time passes, but some songs still serve as a reminder.
Sweet Gifts

Here in Japan, we have a unique custom on Valentine's Day; girls have a chance to show their love to boys. First and foremost, they need to buy chocolates. Sweets can talk. Boys love sweets.
I used to give chocolates to cute boys when I was a child, of course, but now just buy some for my husband, my son, and my daughter. This year, I bought a dog-shaped chocorate for my son. I expected to see his delighted face; however, he ate it in a second without enjoying it! I should've known that: boys will be boys.
I'm here again!
My computer didn't work well for two days, but I seemed to solve the problem...finally! Actually, I tried doing every things that I could do, but right after I had some wonderful advice from Michael, my computer was dead completely. I couldn't help but set up my PC from the start again!
It was troublesome, but my PC has been working since then.
Thank you, Michael. I owe you one!
My goodness...
There seems to be something wrong with my computer. I have'nt access to the Net since last night. I do not know what to do. When I tried checking my email, my PC took some time and told me, 'I'cannot find your name.' something like that. What should I do? It's quite tiresome to post journals by cellphone!
High School Musical

I watched this movie today. I loved it! I had the exact same excitement which I felt after watching one of my favorite films, "Dirty Dancing." I can't dance and sing well, but I like very much watching other people dance and sing. Having said that, I sometimes feel awkward when I'm watching musical films. I should say I can't relate to characters who suddenly start singing. I might not have chosen "High School Musical" on that day because I'm a bit picky. Lucky me.
Space World
My family and I went to an amusement park, "Space "World," located in Kitakyusyu. It was a cold and windy day today, but our children didn't mind at all. We arrived "Space World" at past 11:30, and we spent five hours boarding a few attractions, hanging around the park, and having some snacks.

Let me show you one of my favorite English textbooks. This is it. I've been studying English with it for over ten years.
When I took up learning, I was a working mother and had no time to set aside. I wanted to improve my poor English skills, but I had no choice but teach myself because I couldn't afford to attend any English class. I happned to know the textbook one day, and as soon as I got one, I fell in love with its contents.
The author, Marsha Krakower, used to teach English in one of NHK radio English programs. I never missed her program, but I had trouble understanding because of my awful listening and reading comprehension skills. Still, I enjoyed her program a lot: every dialogue written by Ms. Krakower was quite interesting and very educational. I can assure you that this textbook will be a key to speak English fluently. I've been learned many useful expressions which we can hear in some TV dramas or Hollywood movies.
I'd say I can speak English (a bit) now because I've sticked with this textbook.
Atta girl!
Last month, my daugher took an English test which was called the STEP test, and today her results came up. She passed! The passing score wasn't very high, which means, the test wasn't very difficult for most examinees, but I'm very proud of her.
When she was younger, somehow she hated studying English.
"Stop reading books in English, I can't understand!" she said.
When it comes to English education, I did nothing for her. However, at last, she showed great interest in English at the age of 9, and since then we have been studying together. I don't know how I could help her, but I'd like to enjoy English with her and share our enthusiasms for a second language.
Bread-baking class

I took part in a bread-baking class for the first time in months. It was around four years ago when I found the class, and I used to learn how to bake breads with other two members. It's been a while since we got together last, so I was so glad to see them again!
I'm still not good at cooking (to tell you the truth, I'm quite clumsy.), but I completely enjoyed every moment while I was there.
Our teacher prepared beautiful lunch for us, and we had a wonderful time eating, chatting, and laughing. I still don't know much about how to bake bread, but I'd like to take the class again one of these days.
Babies bring happiness
I spent lovely time speaking English at Alison's English class today. It's been a while since I met her last. She gave birth to a girl last December; she needed to take almost two-month-break for taking care of her. I had been very looking forward to seeing them since I got a mail from Alison, and finally I managed to join her English conversation class which was called "Coffee Morning."
"How cute she is...!"
This was what I said when I saw her beautiful baby. Her little hands, her tiny fingers, her puffy hair, her sweet smell. Babies bring us happiness; we can't help but smile.
When I was a child, I had a dream to be a mother of three. I can't explain why the number is "three," but I suppose I used to believe many children would bring happiness to a mother. Now that my youngest is a first-grader, I can't recall the last time I changed his diapers... Time has paseed very quickly.
Her baby girl was sleeping away while we were chatting. She let us talk as we like! Thank you, Amy. I'm happy to see you at last.
Hawaii
My friends and I got together, and we studied English for two hours. Today, there were 6 members including me, and we had lovely time as usual. One of members told us that she was visiting Hawaii this weekend. How lovely! I'd never been to Hawaii, so I was curious about her plan.
"I'm going to swim, of course," she said.
"And we are going shopping!"
I can't recall the last time to go abroad. In fact, I've never visited any foreign country after restudying English. When was it that I tried speaking English outside Japan? ....Honeymoon in the U.S. Yes, that was the last one...
